Building a PC for the First Time!

Hello all. I figured that my Dell laptop isn't the best thing for my gaming, so I have decided to make a computer. I am looking up parts on www.newegg.com, and I will post pics of the finished product. I have a new found friend who is teaching me how to make a computer, what to get, what's the better deal, ect. I am trying to keep it under $1000, which my friend is teaching me to do. Wish me luck and, if you want, post advice or recommended products. I'll post pics of the products I think I might buy.

Money goes to the following parts (Motherboard/CPU/Memory + stand alone video card + Hard drive).

You'll still need to put money towards power supply, fans, case, dvd drive etc. But the five things above are where most of the budget should be spent)

oh and leave some money for a monitor or two if you're upgrading from a laptop

Thanks for the advice. I don't think I'll need a monitor yet because I'm going to use my TV as a monitor. I am looking at a decent graphics card (is a 550 Ti good?) and a motherboard with many RAM and card slots. I found a pretty cheap six-core processor recommended by my friend. The cases I'm looking at are all priced differently, but I think I might get the most expensive of my choices ($70) due to it's multiple fans with 3 speeds. I haven't gotten a chance to look into RAM, HDDs, Sound Cards, or Power supplies, but I know they are all important and will be watching their values carefully.

This topic alone is a flame war to some folk

But AMD items are your bang for the buck items; Intel is supposed to to be more expensive but better performance. It kinda get's into the Chevy vs. Ford war. Really it depends on how firm your budget is.

I know there might be a war. I hope there isn't one though. I checked on both of those processors, but I decided on an AMD due to it's pricing. I know Intel's better, but I have a budget that is a little tough to meet with too much fancy stuff.

Does anyone here have any recommended brands for RAM? I am on a budget, but I heard that getting a high RAM at first is better than upgrading to a higher RAM.

A $1000 budget is actually not t0o hard to meet while still using better components. First off, will you overclock this or like to have the ability to overclock this computer? Second, what sort of games do you play or plan to play for the next 2 or so years? A 560 Ti is the absolute best as far as price/performance is concerned, but the new 660 TI (and 650 Ti) *should* be coming out mid August.

Now for the "flame-war" part. You say a friend recommended a six core AMD. Would you mind posting the exact model for us? For the most part, quad core Intel's are superior to six core AMD's in every aspect. For gaming, and computing in general, an Intel chip is the best. You can find similarly priced Intel's that will grant you equal or better performance, so I recommend reconsidering your CPU.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask, and good luck with your computer quest.

When I bought my 6core AMD CPU, it was actually cheaper than most intel 4core CPUs. That said, i got the same power, with 2 extra cores and for less money. i'm still happy with my purchase.
IMO, amd and intel are the same. the way i perceive it is that the benchmarks were made 'around' intel. Somewhat like test driving an F1 car in the mud/offroad.
just my 2 cents though.

Well the fact of the matter is, with hyperthreading the OS itself addresses twice the amount of physical cores, essentially making a four-core an eight-core. A pretty key distinction if you ask me.

Whether you perceive said difference as an advantage or a disadvantage is up to you, but either way it seems to me that AMD and Intel are definitely NOT the same if you consider that fact.
don't really need THAT much because it's overkill for my gaming needs.. and by the time games require that much, we'll be on 16core CPUs

You can overclock Intel processors more. If you have the money for a 6 core intel, great. If not AMD will work just fine.

I don't know if I'll really overclock that much. By the way, is there anything wrong with my list/anything missing? I might upgrade a couple of parts on the list soon.

EDIT: Just realized you need an account (possibly MY account) to view the list. If you can't view it, I'll make a link to every part.

All you have to do is make the list public.
