I'm not really one of the awesome sprite builders on the server, but what I could recommend is making sprites that aren't simple, such as the mario sprites. You'll want to go for large sprites, or convert artwork into a smaller size that would fit in a world.
As a tip for building sprites, search google images for a 8 bit sprite on any character you like, and just follow the pattern layer for layer. You'll notice that the pixels are like blocks, and the classic sprites are generally 16 x 16 pixels.
