I think Harlem Shake became so popular as it connects with what makes people happy - viral videos are all based around that type of behaviour which is what makes them so good and makes people want to share them. Plus, something you can replicate relatively easily is always helpful - Think of "Call Me Maybe" - a lot of people hate the song (I'm not one of them - love it) but no one can deny the marketing genius of it. Yes Justin Bieber helped to get the trend started but it's also infectious joy targeted at an age group that uses the internet a lot and will spread rapidly.

I just read the article.

It seems that Harlem Shake is the meme-equivalent of fast food. Not the best or most creative stuff but very easy to produce en masse and still moderately satisfying.
