tho i'm wondering can you actually fall asleep while doing this, cause being paralyzed while hallucinating, without a way to snap out of it sounds like torture
Yes you can, Lucid dreaming and Sleep paralysis are 2 completely different things. Lucid dreaming is the ability to control your dreams, and I have done it before, It's quite awesome really. But sleep paralysis scares me, not being able to move, and hallucinating things is not my cup of tea. It is completely possible to Lucid dream without going into sleep paralysis.

The way I have always heard how to lucid dream is by going to sleep normally. But while your dreaming, you must recognize something from reality, within that dream. At that point, you will become aware of what's around you, but you won't wake up. Never done it before. If I could master the technique then I may start getting more sleep ;)

Give hugs, not drugs.

And there are plenty of tutorials out there, such as This one.

It's more simple than you think.
then it seems that i've been doing that occasionally for the last few years
usually happens some time before waking up, the fun thing is i can remember everything and all the feelings and emotions that happened in the dream
