just a thought that exploded.

Hey guys, it's me Cactus_Puncher, just a lowly builder who got to thinking one day and it kind of brought a few things to mind. I've been Builder for just over 2 weeks now, and i was Cool for about a week before that, and i spent not even 2 days as a Guest.

Sure, a lot of people see a person anxious to level up, but i see a flaw in the rank up system. Here is how it is: in my time as guest all i built to get to get to "Cool" was a derpy Rocket ship and a really bad Golbat sprite. Since the majority of guests don't make it a day of building I'm not surprised that i got to Cool, But this is where my problem comes in.

To get from Cool to Builder, i built a very plain and simple "hotel" a chess set, and a MewTwo sprite, none of my "creations" had any upgrade in talent to get promoted, i just built more. Now as I'm sitting at builder, I'm thinking to myself "why exactly do i have the rank 'builder' if i can't build for shit, i don't even know how to make a simple Circle" since getting builder I've only been helping random people, and building exceedingly simple builds, like a wooden fort, and a "sand castle". i don't understand why i was promoted to this rank if i have absolutely no skill in building, i just build things that take up a lot of time and blocks.

I think that the "Cool" rank should be the time you spend getting better at building, not building tons of crappy things. Quality over Quantity should be the way you acquire builder. But, hey, i think ConroD said it best a few hours ago "I'm Tired of these builders putting their sense in" so you don't have to read this, you can demote me, you don't even have to care about this post at all. i just wish that the Promotions should be held to a higher standard. Peace.

You'll hear alot that the higher the rank, the more the trust. This is true, but it means the lower tanks then obviously have a different objective assigned to their achievement. Pretty much Cool rank is given to those that will take the time to register on forums, get noticed in the community, and contribute to the worlds through builds. I do believe (I've heard) theres a 10 hour mininum as well. As I say to everyone, we just wanna make sure you aren't a douche.

Builder rank is given to those Cool ranked who have not only built well, or helped others as a Cool ranked member with things like lava and water, but those that the higher-up's have noticed as someone they can at least trust not to go around abusing their rank making lava swastica's and water pecker's. (I think there's also something like a 75 hour minimum on Builder rank as well)

As you know, builder rank gives you hide and patrol abilities (I may be wrong on those rank abilities), so it goes without saying, that although you dont have to, ITS A GOOD IDEA to use those in a community-assistive roll, such as...well, hiding, and patrolling... Lemme tell you a story...

I started MC Multiplayer in the first week of May. After about 45 minutes of Server surfin', I landed on T9k's, and havet left since. I got cool rank 2 days after joining the server, and made builder a day later. I racked up over 200 hours in less than a month (partly in a misguided attempt for Engineer rank), patrolling and catching griefers (Its not like I didnt enjoy my time otherwise). My builds wear me out a bit due to their detail, so I havent built anything since Cool36, and GUEST204. Yea. 204. Since then Ive done nothing but patrol full time (When on Classic; I bought Beta Earlier this month, so Ive been pretty spotty on Classic), taking advantage of the abilities my Rank allows me.

As I said, you dont have to do that, but it helps. Helps you, me, all of us in classic. You have to remember that the "ranks" arent actually RANKS. They're just a way of building a trusted community, one that we can all enjoy. They make a pool of players that you know will greet you with a "ohai" when you log in, that will help when you need them (mostly), and that wont just run around and jack-up your builds.

Now, the higher ranks (Eng +) are actual RANKS. They're abilities give them a very substantial role and responsibility. (We wont get into how they are acquired. Its a whole different ball game. Besides, type /ranks, and you'll see by how populated each level is, its pretty futile to attempt to get a promotion to those ranks.)

Hope this helps a bit.

Perq.

I just noticed there a few errors with my previous post:

(I may be wrong on those abilities): I meant I'm not sure at the moment which abilities are gained at which rank, such as /tp or /?.

After thinking about it, I honestly cant remember how long till I was cool and how long till I was builder. I do remember that the were both given VERY fast. If you look at my /info you can see when I joined and when I made Builder. It was pretty quick.

I thought you'd think this was funny too. My first build was on guest191. A bunch of realistic businesses such as McD's and Motel 6 (Then again, those might've been for Builder application.) Oh well, you should peek 'em. You might get a kick.

Cactus, I understand what you're saying. I felt kind of the same way when I joined T9K. I still kind of suck at building. But I keep at it, and keep improving. The ranks aren't given just because you've built some things and submitted them online, they're given because it shows you're into the community, you're working on making some cool things, and you kind of give a damn. If you think your builds suck, that's on your own head. Perhaps you should work on improving your skills, it's obviously something you care about and are concerned about since you've made this post.

I don't think pointing out what you may think of as a flaw in the ranking system will get you a demote (but I'm not in charge of that, so who knows?). Criticism is always welcome, especially if it only helps to improve things, and it's not presented in a troll-ish, douchey way.

I too have thought about the subject of a tighter ranking system, but when i look, all the new cools are people i've helped, the ones who don't troll, and the ones who actually took the time to type /rules and follow them. And then, if they are really interested, they show up one day as a builder, and it becomes obvious that it's just not about the builds.

perq, you completely missed the point of this thread, it's not me complaining that i'm not engineer, as if i would ever come close to getting that, it's about how Cool, and mainly builder "Ranks" are given out like candy on Halloween.

I think that in terms of the numbers, there's something like 10,000 guests, 50,000 cools, 15,000 builders.... And then like 23 engineers.

And cactus, that was the point I was trying to make. Believing the Ranks are a system of authority or creativeness is incorrect. The only ranking system applicable in Classic is those Eng+. I am in agreement with your comment that promotions are handed out like candy, but thats beause they are SUPPOSED to be handed out like candy. Think of the ranks like a club. It dont take much to be in the club. Welcome to the club.

But if this is confusing as well, then I guess my point wont ever be made.

My figures above were very wrong, just rectifying.
It's more like:
72, 000+ Guests
1,000+ Cools
480 Builders
23 Engineers
20 Awesomes
7 Pro
4 Epic
3 Owner

Closer to that sort of numbers.

I'm not sure how to respond to this one, on the one hand I got Cool rank after ONE build on my first day. I have friends and even my own brother that build awesome build after awesome build and still remain a Guest. I suppose it's more about making connections, getting to know the community, and reporting griefers even when you aren't able to do anything other than stand there and say in chat "Uhm...hey guys...griefer :D". I like the way things work rank-wise, and I do see builders as community helpers, ensuring that everything runs smoothly.

Quit whining. Here is my promotion app to become cool (which I still am to this day). Look at all the crap I had to build

Haven't played classic in a while though. You would think that they would have went ahead and just made me builder...

This is exactly the point i'm making. It doesnt matter what you build. We all cant be creative. But douche-baggery will surly keep your name yellow.

And by the way what ConroD said and did to me actually hurt my feelings. I didn't want to sound like a smart ass and since that griefer behaved like a damn douche, I was SLIGHTLY douchey. Just had to tell you that. Best regards: againstorban
If you don't mind me asking, what exactly happened?
