Make your smartphone a little bit smarter...

Most of us today have smart phones. In fact, according to Pew Reaserch Center, a Washington, DC based research company, 46% of American's own a smart phone, up from 35% last year. That's not even counting other countries like Europe and China where the cell phone market is even larger.

How many of you with smart phones actually use their full potential? We check emails, look up Google inquiries, map out directions, and most of all, we make phone calls. That's only the tip of the iceberg though. Our phones have powerful dual and quad core processors, they should be capable of so much more.

Well, it looks like Microsoft may have the answer.

Introducing... on{X} (pronounced: on-ex).

What's on{x}? (You didn't watch the video did you?)
on{x} is a javascript API that allows you to remotely program "triggers" for your phone. These triggers can be as simple as 'Go to wikipedia when I unlock my phone' to more advanced ones such as 'Text "I'm driving, I will call you back later" while driving'.

Now the website has many pre-set "recipes" in which the developers/community have published. However, anyone who knows javascript (or is learning or wants to learn) can create their own recipes from scratch or improve on someone else's. It's all in "simple" (yea right) javascript.

I find these very fascinating, as some of the recipies get pretty specific and customized. One says to remind the person to bring an umbrella if it is going to rain that day, the first time they unlock the phone. Another says to text your wife "my battery is low" when your battery reaches below 15%.

These are things our smart phones are capable of. Automated tasks that something "smart" should be able to do.

I feel that this could go far if the community grabs hold, and could encourage would be programmers to practice javascript in a safe environment since what you do is personal to your phone. Feel confident in a new recipe you made? Publish it or share it on the forums.

There are some qualms I have as of this moment, which really are minor but include:

  • the companion app is android only
  • you can not create rules on the client app
  • the app requires a facebook login for authentication (for now)

Again, these are just minor things, and I'm sure MS will iron them out soon.

The client app is pretty simple, it runs in the background so it knows your state (running, walking, driving) and allows you to turn each recipe on or off, or even delete it. The client app is updating immediately upon creation of a new rule or "recipe" and will alert you so in the notification tray.

What do you guys think? Will this go far? What is the potential? Share some of your ideas for a recipe. Otherwise check out the app for yourself. You'll find it in the Google Play store.

Side note: This app is created by MS, only for Android, tracks your usage, and requires a facebook login. :3

Example: Look at what mikeymagic made (and is working on), it tells you the last time you unlocked your phone, good for security or knowing if your GF peeked in your phone.

It's just for authentication. They are working on others at the moment. Facebook is the most popular 3rd party method for authentication at the moment, so it's only natural, plus it doesn't retrieve any personal information.

@moon, Google Now is kind of like that (check weather, etc). However on{X} kind of allows you to do things Siri would do.

This. I love this app. Except for the fact I can't use location services because 3G costs monies.
