If it feels like it's been a while since the last Minecraft update -- then you're right. Between Mojang's visit to the USA for the Independent Games Festival and Game Developers Conference, there actually hasn't been a game update since February 23rd. But wait - there's a light at the end of the tunnel!
That's right, Minecraft 1.4's release is scheduled for this week. Hopefully to include the new wolf pets, it's an update that many avid gamers are looking forward to. Unfortunately, the previously mentioned "stat and achievement" system doesn't look like it's going to make it into this patch, but I'm sure Notch will release it soon enough (#notchtime).
"The plan is to release 1.4 this week."

"Achievements will NOT be chores like “cut down 10000 trees”, but rather challenges like “ride a pig off a cliff”. Stats, however, will be used to keep track of how many trees you have cut down. The long term plan is to show achievements and stats from the profile page on minecraft.net as well, in case you want to brag."
