I for one, appreciate this.

It's quite easy to read once you know how to read it.

I pretty much do what Woot does. I use Gimp instead though, and I have that palette that was mentioned, set up for Minecraft colors. I convert the image to that, and then build pixel by pixel up. Usually I go from left to right like I'm writing, with the pixels. I tend to screw it up when I try to make frames.

Note, DO NOT follow the palette by the letter. It's not completely accurate, since computers don't think of color the same way. It's just supposed to be a basic idea, I improvise on them a lot.

I typically just throw said image in photoshop, scale it to whatever size I want (so one pixel is literally one block, and I don't end up making something rediculously huge), the zoom in really far and build it pixel by pixel.

Two tricks:
Use dirt or dark gray for dark red.
Don't choose an image with lots of dark blue. There is nothing dark blue in minecraft, and thus, sonic sprites look terrible.

What do you mean by "Scale it to whatever size I want". I don't really get that part. And how does that change anything if one pixel is still one block? Do you lower the resolution or something?

i think you could create a slightly curved canvas

viewing from the ground should look ok and you get a few extra pixels

i haven't seen anyone do it yet though

that is a fantastic idea, that is definately going on my to do list.

if you make a slightly curved canvas then what do you think the best slope should be? I think maybe 2/3 or 4/5 or something (in terms of rise/run)

I highly suggest using a program called Paint.Net
sprite example.gif

Not only can you enlarge the picture, but you can select to have a grid and a ruler around and in your picture, allowing you to easily pick out what goes where.
Paint.net is free, and all you have to do is google paint.net and download it. It's my favorite free paint program and I highly recommend others to use it as well.
