mmm They most likely chose to keep it offline when they were in the air. Because if something insane was suppose to happen (Like tons of hackers attacking at once) Then they would not be able to do anything making a very very very long vacation for the whole team not to mention bad press. Thats my thinking so in an answer to your Q. No. No they do not have anyone monitoring the server.

but are there people playing on classic? becuase on the list of team9000's gaming community theres like 19 ppople on the classic MC server

Guys! I found the server!

Is it supposed to look like that?

Firstly, Minecraft seems to be a kind of unstable game. Game servers and websites are more prone to attacks as well.

Second, 5K for a TB of bandwidth? I don't think so... The cost for maintaining and constantly monitoring this is way more than you think but still, people pay good money to play this game online and minecraft.net is down half the time so I am personally frustrated. I also noticed that you are able to ping minecraft.net which means the IP address for the site hasn't blocked ICMP traffic. This would prevent some (if not all) of the network attacks on the site.

Still the company has enough money that it seems like they should have most of these problems resolved by now.

around how much money does world of warcraft make if all the expansions cost from $30 to the new one to $40 and for two monthes of game play it costs $30 and there is 12 monthes in a year and they stated there is currently around 12 million active players

Ahhh that means 1000 GB per month total bandwidth. I work at a data center and I was thinking to myself "1TBps bandwidth even possible?". I guess it is kind of like minutes with a cell phone so to speak.

Anyway it isn't just a web server, there are likely many many database servers that have to authenticate every time someone logs in. But I see your point. They are a multi-million dollar (or euro, whatever) company and shouldn't have all these problems given you can't play the game online if the servers aren't up.

thanks i was about to paste something similar :p

the classic server does not require authentication as it is free, it still works.

the reason the 'server is down' is because of minecraft.net's authentication server being borked AGAIN. if minecraft.net returns a blank page, ALL minecraft beta servers are down... i still cant understand the logic of this, but anyways.

I really hate you all. It's not like them just throwing money at it all is going to fix it in the long term. They tried that, better servers, different hosts, and look it hasn't work. Give it time, and realize that you paid to play a game that isn't finished. Realize that this game is going through some growing pains and that it's not going to be perfectly stable any time in the near future. And get over yourselves and realize that you aren't going to be treated like royalty because you paid ~$10 - $20 dollars to play a game that really should cost $50 in the end.

Throwing money at it won't fix the problem? Their whole staff is seven people... Plus I don't think the game will ever be truly "finished".

And I hate you too

I'm not sure how your first two sentences actually apply. And the game will get to the point where the only things being "developed" are basically mods. The core game will be truly finished.

They need to hire more staff basically. They are hardly spending anything on developing the final product. Honestly when I learned they only had a handful of people working for the whole company I was kind of surprised. They are making tons of money and spending proportionally very much less developing the game.

You can't go from a single person to a massive company real quick, their only income at this point in minecraft, and they probably don't want to bet on that keeping a massive company afloat. There's a plethora of reasons that one might not want to go larger than a small group of people, it's a hassle to get something big like that going starting from nothing. Give it time, things will get better and mojang will continue to slowly grow.
