Newbie's Greeting

Hi,
Just signed up for the forums. I'm quite new to multiplayer Minecraft (I played the single player; torrented it (please don't ban me!) before I bought it) and somewhat confused by all these towns and stuff. Could someone point me in the right direction in idiot terms? Much obliged.
