Please refrain from creating unnecessary obsidian

I was also using a nearby lava pool for fuel, and when I logged on, someone had converted most of it to obsidian. This was right next to my home, and the large amount of flowing lava made it obvious that the lava pool was being emptied. This pool wasn't in the way or anything, so I can't understand why someone would do this.

(I added the sign afterwards)

This is what it looked like a few days ago:

There was no reason to do this. Every corner around the pool was accessible (you wouldn't be trapped) and you had to go out of your way to get to it.

I think our town's (Ascension) general rule of thumb when it comes to lava pools is to pour water on the to avoid ANY potential for falling in. I can't say this is something one of did, but it may be a guideline others may follow.

ftfy. Also, cobblestone could achieve the same result, and this is half a kilometer from Ascension.

I didn't know randomly generated in-game features such as lava pits were suddenly considered builds. In that case, everyone is griefing my world I built. Everyone needs to get off the server or I'm going to report them.

There are plenty of lava pits around, and the fact that you didn't have a sign or anything that indicated you were using the pit, then I really don't think you have a leg to stand on.

It was right next to my home, and as you know from reading my post, it was obvious that it was being used. Ascension would consider it griefing if I went over there and spammed obsidian, so you don't really have a leg to stand on by defending that "policy".

stop whining. lava is getting water poured over it everytime i come across it. it's lava. i would rather inconvenience someone than risk death.

Oh. Right. Because you post everything you're going to be doing in MCS on the forums, and everyone is supposed to read it and make sure they're not going to inconvenience you in any way. Really guy, it's a game, and you're making a huge issue out of something that isn't. I was telling you what most people in Ascension do when we come across lava pools, and that others probably do the same. If having to dig up a little obsidian is THAT big of a deal to you, then maybe fence off the pit so it is abundantly obvious and no one falls in.

Both sides have a point, but I think the case here stands that you didn't have any sort of marker indicating that you wanted that lava pool around. There was nothing indicating that they SHOULDN'T convert the lava, perhaps they intended to return and mine the obsidian? Either way, this can hardly be considered griefing as there were no noticeable indicators of ownership claim.

To speak to my point, I'll say this: as a matter of habit, I pour water on every pool of lava I come across, even if it's not in my way - excepting surface pools, which I consider worthy of preservation as they are fairly rare and I have a thing for preserving rare generated areas (I've built towns around them on other servers, also see my "nature preserves" on nearly every past T9k Survival server). It can hardly be said that any pool of lava is special unless there's something to indicate such - there are literally hundreds, perhaps thousands of lava pools in the world.

It's kinda hard to tell what underground features might be sort of "owned" by someone and which ones aren't. For example, if I'm in a cave and there's some un-mined ores, just because I'm near some building, does that mean I shouldn't mine them? I personally tend to figure that if it doesn't look like an obviously-built structure, then it is natural and I'm going to mine it. I'll assume nobody constructs artificial abandoned mineshafts and puts iron ore in them for decorative purposes, and that removing the ore is griefing!

Whilst I also get annoyed when people turn lava into obsidian, in the absence of a sign, I don't think I'd expect someone to interpret the lava being non-still as meaning too much - for all they know, someone was just half-way through removing the lava and gave up, or died, or something.

Sign the lava pool you want left alone if it's in a cavern. If you don't want to sign it, get it zoned appropriately(though this wastes the very minimal amount of zoning allowed). If you don't or can't do either of these, deal with it. It's not like lava is particularly rare. Sure it is a pain in the ass, but its a precaution many people take, myself included.
