Wednesday. That was when the thread was posted, and also the last time Woot responded to the thread. As far as I know the bugs began immediately after the server came back up from the SSD crash, which was the Saturday previous.
Now, I understand Woot is busy. I understand he can't spend all his time fixing bugs and every little error players receive, seeing as how he's on a trip around North America, maintaining several other game servers, a Single-Sign-On website, and not to mention several 'extra' websites and accounts (livestream, YouTube, etc); but this is just ridiculous. Why should it take more than a week for a bug that is preventing nearly every player from enjoying the game to be fixed?
I might very well be one of the last people who should be telling anyone how to run their community. However, as far as I'm concerned, when you take the role of an Administrator (and this applies to every admin, including the Pros and whatnot on Classic), you are taking on the responsibility of placing every person in the community's enjoyment above your own. When you are the only person around that can fix certain issues, this responsibility, by necessity, is even greater. That, to me, means that you place bug fixing as a priority above gaming yourself, socializing with other gamers, and going so far as to avoid sleeping until a reasonable solution has been found - even if it's only temporary. This goes even further when a bug is so critical that players can't even play the game anymore due to the extreme number of crashes and server-kicks occurring. Were something like that to happen on my own server (and this exact bug HAS happened, for your information - though it only took me a few hours to identify and correct), I would not be sleeping, I would be calling in sick to work, and wouldn't be sexing up my wonderful (and amazingly understanding) girlfriend until such time as a solution had been found. Yes, I would even forgo sex for the sake of my players.
I expect a level of dedication from a community owner that is perhaps too high. Feel free to call me out on it. What none of you can argue, however, is that this has gone on for far too long for reasonable argument.
And the above isn't the only thing. Several players have been wanting Nether, End, or unobtainable (by normal means) materials for their builds - including WorldHub, which needs over 500 stacks of Netherbrick alone, not to mention Glowstone, Soulsand, Netherrack, or End Stone - or Blaze Rods. The server shops for End and unobtainable materials was supposed to have been set up weeks ago - still no shops. Woot has mentioned he was going to set up a Nether mining world in the same fashion as the current Wilderness - that couldn't take more than half an hour to set up in my experience, and we still don't have it. Permissions for using water, lava, and flint-and-steel have been restricted to players who previously ventured to Sign Island in the last world, and Woot has still not set up a replacement for it; meaning every single new player and many of the old still can't use buckets. This is a major problem for WorldHub as we need obsidian - lots of it - and more than half of our members can't pour water. And now nobody can use eggs or lava anywhere (even their own plots) - another bug that has been around since the SSD crash. Woot is still apparently the only one who can give 'premium plots' (near spawn) to towns - and he isn't responding to the requests for them. By my understanding, both Tofurkey and Ozy are capable of giving those plots out, but from what I've gathered they're hesitant to do so without Woot's express consent. Physics (fluid and gravity in particular) are bugged in the Wilderness due to the everlasting night - this is one of those minor things that isn't hugely important, but nonetheless.
Perhaps if the workload is getting to be too much for Woot, he should give some control to other members of the community. Give Ozy, Tofurkey, or another player (maybe if there's someone more qualified?) access to the console and server folder. Tell them not to do anything critical unless he's approved it, but feel free to try and fix all the minor bugs or start introducing things like shops or the Nether while he's busy with other things. There's a time to be in full control, and there's a time to start trusting other people with that control - and I'm of the firm belief that now falls into the latter category.
And don't any of you say "play another game" or "do something else". I want to play Minecraft. I spend a large portion of my time doing other things, Minecraft is one of the things I like to do. So help me, none of you have the right to tell me what to do with my time.
Now, for those of you not aware, I'm leaving town today to work in Fort McMurray. I'll still be getting on here via my phone and remote access to my computer (I'm not bringing my laptop), but for most intents and purposes, I won't be around. I'll be gone at minimum a week, at most two weeks; which should be more than enough time for at least the most critical bugs to be resolved. When I return, I want to be able to play Minecraft without being kicked or crashing every 5 minutes. If when I get back the major bugs haven't been resolved, I will most likely be leaving Team9000 to find a community where the owner shows the dedication required.
Don't get me wrong. I love this community. I love what Woot has done so far. In fact, I would shut down my own public server in favor of this one were Woot to offer me access to the server control; and I would be as dedicated to keeping the Survival server running smooth as I am to my own. I'm just fed up with unfulfilled promises and critical bugs, as any of us should be.
Remember, please keep all actual discussion of the bugs in their own threads, and no hate.
See you soon.
