Sonic 4 Episode 1: A game you either loved or hated. Though I personally believed it was not half-bad, many, MANY people hated it. Sure, the game had broken physics, some frustrating level design, and horrible music, but honestly, I had fun for most of the time I played the game (the only exceptions being Lost Labyrinth Zone Act 3, Mad Gear Zone Act 3, and the final boss). So, Sega said they listened. They said they fixed Episode 1's problems. But were they telling the truth?
Well, the glaring problem for most people in Episode 1 was the broken physics. For example, you could be running at top speed, and if you did not hold forward while you jumped, you would come to a dead stop. Another example is if you rolled down a hill in a ball. In the classics, if you rolled down a hill in a ball, you'd gradually pick up speed. Makes sense, right? In Episode 1, rolling down a hill in a ball would just result in you slowly, slowly rolling down without picking up any speed. It made absolutely no sense. People hated it. I hated it. So did Episode II fix it? Yes and no. While the physics are definitely improved over the previous Sonic 4 episode, there were still issues here and there. You still won't pick up speed if you roll down a hill, and your air dash will allow you to pick up speed at a ridiculous rate, similar to the previous episode. Another example of poor physics is with what I like to call the "69 Attack", where you and your sidekick Tails both form one ball, which resembles....well....you know what I'm getting at. Anyways, with this attack, you can go flying up 90 degree angles, without very much speed. So in general, the physics are fixed. In fact, most things were fixed.
The music in Sonic 4 Episode 1 was absolutely terrible. It sounded like dying cats. The boss theme sounded like something from a carnival, and the final boss theme was a lame, 9 second loop. Sonic 4 Episode 2 has an absolutely amazing soundtrack. I'd try and explain it, but I think it would make more sense for you to just listen yourself:

The music in this game kicks major ass. Some hate it, I think they have shitty taste in music.
So, the bosses in this game have amazing music, but are they good in general?
The answer to that is kind-of. Some zones had amazing bosses (White Park, Oil Desert, and Death Egg Mk II), but the others had lame and/or confusing bosses (Sylvania Castle and Sky Fortress). Every boss in the game has one cheap shot in them, (WARNING: SPOILERS) Sylvania Castle's boss will hit you with a large laser after hitting him many, many times. It will take you by surprise, and if you don't have any rings, it will be a major pain in the ass. In White Park, Metal Sonic has two dick moves up his sleeve. First, he will create electric "walls" at you that you have to avoid by either jumping through the hole in it, jumping over it, or using Tails to fly over it. Each one of them can be a pain in the ass to dodge, particularly the ones where you have to use Tails to jump over and the ones you have to jump through. Oil Desert's boss has a phase 2 that can be a pain in the ass. Sky Fortress' boss is flat out terrible. Why does Metal Sonic need a ship? He already can fly and has a massive arsenal already built into him! The boss is long, tedious, and phase 2 can kill you instantly, regardless of rings, making you start all over again. Death Egg Mk II contains two acts, which are nothing but bosses. Act 1 has you fighting Metal Sonic......twice. The first fight, Metal Sonic is creating giant balls of electricity, and Dr. Robotnik is protecting him. The only real pain in the ass is getting around Robotnik, who will block you from getting to Metal Sonic, in the small window of time you have to attack him. After that, is a re-match between you and Metal Sonic in a platforming race. If you aren't exact, Metal Sonic will pull ahead of you, win the race, and instantly kill you, regardless of rings. The final boss is what it should be. Fucking difficult. I won't spoil it. It is a tough boss, and a good one.
I think the only true problem with this game is Tails. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he really only followed along, and if you had a second controller, your friend could control Tails for the small amount of time you weren't leaving him in the dust. In this game, it is different. Sonic Team/Dimps tried to make it fun to play Tails. To do this, they made it impossible for Tails to be left behind, and they added sections where he is REQUIRED to get through the act. While making Tails impossible to ditch is a good thing, the Tails teamwork sections are HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! FUCKING HORRIBLE I TELL YOU! While using the 69 Attack to get through walls and other obstacles is fun, using him to fucking fly through things is an absolute fucking nightmare. I don't even know where to start. First off, Tails can only carry you for a VERY strict amount of time, meaning you cannot fuck up at all. Second, THE SECTIONS ARE FUCKING CHEAP. I damn near uninstalled the game after White Park Act 3. In White Park Act 3, you must fly very VERY precisely through spikes on the ceiling and floor, then you must book it through three sets of Badniks who create impenetrable walls. Oh yeah, and this is all underwater, with no oxygen bubbles. So if you don't do this all in a strict time limit, you're dead. If the Badniks are able to make their impenetrable walls, all you can do is sit and watch your little blue hero drown. That wasn't a spoiler, it was a fucking warning. Other sections of the game will have you flying over bottomless pits, through sets of flamethrower enemies, and more.
Overall, Sonic 4 Episode 2 is a good game. I'd recommend it any day. (Gameinformer is a bunch of fuckin' morons).
