Raptor's Review: Sonic the Hedgehog 2

After Babybacon reviewed Megaman 10, I thought it would be fun to review the retro game I know and love the most. Then Bacon ninja'd me and reviewed it himself. Well that is not going to stop me. Anyways, Raptor's Review will not be a regular series like Cities of the Server. I'll do one when I feel like it. So, lets start the review.

As far as the plot goes, it's fairly simple. Dr. Robotnik is once again capturing woodland creatures, but this time, he is also building his ultimate weapon, the Death Egg, in an attempt to take over the world. It is unknown until Sonic 3 & Knuckles, that the Death Egg is just the Death Star with Robotnik's face on it. Anyways, the story is simple and not a major part of the game, something that should apply to every Sonic game.

The gameplay is also simple, but FUCKING DIFFICULT at the same time. You start at the beginning of an act, and then race through the act as fast as possible, killing the enemies in your way. If you wish to obtain a secret power (SPOILER: Super Sonic), you must get 50 rings and reach a checkpoint. Speaking of rings, they are what keep you alive. Take a single hit without a ring in hand, shield around your body, or invincibility power up, your dead. Every two acts make up a "zone". At the end of each zone, you battle Dr. Robotnik in a boss fight. Most of these bosses are very easy once you learn how to deal with them. Speaking of zones, here are the zones you will have to conquer:

WARNING: SPOILERS

Emerald Hill: A nice, easy beginner's level. The ambiance is nice, the Badniks are weak, and the boss fight is a complete wimp.

Chemical Plant: As the title suggests, your in a chemical plant. The whole zone looks pretty awesome, and is one of the fastest zones in the game. However, this zone is very difficult for newcomers. I won't spoil it, but the end of act 2 is very difficult if you don't know what your doing.

Aquatic Ruin: The game's water zone. Stay underwater too long without breathing in an air bubble results in the player drowning. However, if the player is good enough, he can avoid the water all together. Once you can avoid the water, this zone is very easy.

Casino Night: Slot machines. That is all.

Hill Top: Blue and boring. It is also pretty difficult your first few playthroughs.

Mystic Cave: Shit just got real. This zone is the game's way of saying "you've had 5 zones of easy, get ready for some difficult shit". This zone is not easy, and is home to one of the most infamous traps of all time. The pit.

Oil Ocean: A unique zone. The lower pathway in this zone is filled with oil. Basically, if you fall into oil, you need to keep jumping to survive. If you sink to the bottom, it is instant death.

Metropolis Zone: This zone is the longest in the game (it has THREE acts instead of two), and one of the most difficult. From this point onward, the game is going to be ridiculously fucking difficult. Oh yeah, and Slicers. Get ready to hate them.

Sky Chase: Extremely easy, this zone is just riding on the top of a plane, jumping at Badniks.

Wing Fortress: This zone is fucking Hell. Your constantly threatened by bottomless pits (which mean instant death), ridiculous platforming sections, and an EVIL boss fight.

Death Egg: The final zone, but I won't spoil it.

This game is fun, yet difficult. If you have not played it during its 19 years of existence, I'd recommend you pick it up. It is only $5 now.

This game is available on PSN, Xbox Live, Steam, and probably other places I have never heard of. You'll have no trouble getting your hands on this game.

If you could write this good all the time, you could probably avoid that 'D-rated school' you mention in your About the Author.
