Creeper, an area of the outlands will not be wiped unless:

A. It is unbelievable ugly (Like the spawn region)
B. With further check, there were basically no resources there at all (Like the minerals near the Elm Creek portal)
C. The area has been griefed to a point of no return (This is yet to happen)

Actually James we have BARELY taped into the minerals xD. You just have to move further out for better mining.

Yeah... I think Woot / Sonic has said we've barely touched 2% of all the minerals. Sure, it's hard to find anything really valuable like diamonds, but if we explore further afield we can find more.
The Outlands, especially near spawn and near the portals, are criss-crossed with random two-block-tall-one-block-wide tunnels and cave systems. Most people's mines will be connected to other people's, especially if you get to bedrock. My mine in Treetop Farms (the one that got griefed, if you saw the thread) eventually and unwittingly connected up to a really huge system of tunnels and cave systems. There are obsidian farms and all sorts of wierd things... It would be very easy to get lost and never see the light of day again.

The point being... A wipe would be unlikely considering the Outlands are barely explored (no-one has got to the Far Lands yet... But thank God for that!) and the outrage some players would have would not be worth the effort.
