Requesting a debate subforum

I noticed we have a lot of debates on T9K now, and I like that. So, Sonic, could you add a debate subforum under Mature Discussion? And add a feature so that our views are listed below our avatars (Like Atheist and Liberal?)

I think it's generally healthy to debate your views and see other people's point of views and see if your points are as sound as you think.

Reply if you guys think this feature would be good or bad.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the feature only applies in the subforum. So you know where they stand.

I do not believe this is a wise idea. As much as I enjoy a good argument and healthy discussions I feel like this would only lead to a division of the site. I don't think we need more of that.

I think a conversation would suffice if someone really wanted to debate with someone else. However, these debates do leak onto other threads on the rare occasion...

Still, most debates happen in a thread with a topic that is completely off the topic the debate is about. I would probably prefer a place to discuss topics or political happenings without the sense of being off topic or derailing as such.

I edited my original post before refreshing the page.

This is pretty much the reason why. It works on facepunch.com, so I don't see why it wouldn't here.

I agree, we've been derailing to many threads lately and turning them into a debate on a specific subject rather than the context being discussed, for example the Cispa thread was quickly turned into a debate on homosexuality.... anyway, I think a debating sub-forum for discussion of mature subjects would provoke intellectual conversation, which is needed around here..

You could submit a bug report, since I think that is the preferred manner to submit any suggestions for change/addition.

I think it should just stay the way it currently is.

Maybe just type a tag of [Debate] in front of the thread title you wish to make, so people know that it's a debate thread. Because the mature discussions sub forum needs more love and bulk to it, In my honest opinion of course.

I hope you all realise that this discussion, being an exchange of ideas and differences in views on the matter of having a debate subforum, is a debate itself.

So that's why we don't need one, if you want a thread for debating. Make a point and see if anyone counters it. I highly doubt everyone has the same ideas, which they don't.

I will disagree with you on that. Just to prove your point. :D

I actually like this idea, but I don't think a full subforum is needed for it. I like Beese' idea; with the [Debate] tag in the title, with the intention being that these kinds of threads would appear in Mature Discussion and stay relatively on topic compared to everything else.
