So I got a computer for free yesterday...

Okay, so my school was giving away obsolete computers yesterday and I got one. It has Windows xp, but I cannot use the internet on it because it's too far for a wired connection and I don't know how to get wireless internet on it. Any advice? It also came with a CRT monitor, keyboard, and mouse, so I'll be able to get on Minecraft again if I fix this.

It will probably have several pci slots on the motherboard and the case will have some knock-out-slots in the back. Buy a wireless pci card and install it. It's pretty self explanatory. Something else you can do is buy a usb wifi adaptor but they break easy and are less reliable.

Could always pick yourself up a thousand feet of Cat6 ;)

I'll refer you to this thread on Whirlpool which a simple google search would've presented you with :p
If you're wondering about wireless cards.

I would've used Google, but:

1. Google can't tell you which is better, due to it's lack of AI
2. I like the funny comments and derailments that are bound to happen.

Plus, I would've done a wired internet, but all I have is a homemade CAT5 cable that's 15 feet long :p

Likely that old beast wouldn't be compatible with Cat6 anyway.

EDIT: Holy fuck, that's like $10 cheaper than the Home Depots in Canada >.< Good thing as a contractor I order bulk from suppliers or I'd have to start ordering from the States.

As this thread is posted in the Mature Discussion forum, all derailments are removed. If you meant to post in random, feel free to let an admin know so we can move it :)

I'm using a Netgear USB Wireless Adapter and it works perfectly fine. Pretty cheap too.

Well, if no derailments, then at least I can still get some good advice :)

the easiest way to do this, would be to do one of 2 things.

1) casham's advice and get a longer cable.

or,

2) get a wireless router, and the corresponding wireless card. for my example, I will be showing the Lynksys brand hardware.

Router: https://t9k.me/1Uz

Adapter: https://t9k.me/1UA or https://t9k.me/1UB

If you have a laptop and not a desktop, only the USB adapter will work for you. Shop around a bit and you can usually find way better prices than directly from the Cisco website. You can also find great deals on other brands of routers/adapters. This should be what you are looking for.

but what if he does want? some people like cables. can always make it go by under if he has one of those tiny service basements

I am guessing he lives with his parents or legal guardians. Unless they are hoarders or just don't give a shit a cable isn't going to fly. Think about it. He is going to have to plug a cable into his router or switch, then run it down a hallway to wherever his room (or basement) is unless he makes a hole. I'm also guessing he doesn't know how to make a cat5 cable so he is going to have to make a hole big enough to get the end through. It is going to be nothing bu t a big hassle. Go wireless.

I learned how in job shadowing :3

Second, yes, I live with my parents. I would love to try out wired Internet, but there's a giant wall between my living room and my parent's (we have two living rooms, one for my parents with a huge surround sound, and me and my sibling's living room, which has 3 consoles, Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 Elite, a laptop, and now a desktop.)

Third, I might try moving it into the other living room to test out this dinosaur, so I might try derping on Minecraft to see how well it handles it.

EDIT NOTE* I also know how to make CAT6.

Wireless generally max out at about 54mbps anyway so I don't think thats a good choice. Plus alot of factors in the house can affect the quality of your wireless signal. For example: I had 10mbps internets about 7-8 months ago and the router was literally 3m away from my computer on the other side of a wall. I was getting constant interruptions and pretty bad speeds.

Probably because the walls of all houses here are made of solid concrete unlike the flimsy plaster that most American houses seem to be made of lol.

After getting fibre, my house was wired up completely so that every room has a port on the wall. If done right, the wires can be concealed pretty well along the ceiling.

Conclusion: Wireless bad. Wire good.
