It's almost here! In his latest blog entry Notch promises a ton of new content, and official modding support!
Here's the short list of features announced:
  • NPC villages
  • Randomly generated dungeons
  • New biome code
  • Fully working Creative Mode (and individual admins can enter Creative Mode on a Survival Mode server if they choose)
  • Critical hits
  • Sprinting
  • More farming options

Main question: DOES THIS MEAN THAT WE FINALLY NEED A REAL WORLD WIPE?

i think that if we implement adventure mode into the server, then we probably should not have NPC villages, people would kill everyone, then take the resources. So the cities would probably become griefed, but it would not really be against any rules to do so.

And to answer your question, i think that they would probably wipe large parts of the map (hopefully telling us which areas would be wiped before) so that the new dungeon systems would actually be available on the server

I think that would be harder now that they mentioned they changed the way terrain generation was handled. In any case it would be messy.

yeah, i dont think that seeing by the amounts of complaints of recent, small wipes, then if they were to start doing large scale wipes, the community would go into an uproar of complaints saying they lost items because of the wipes, so it will be a gamble of whether or not this update will go over smoothly

I can't wait for it to come out, it's gonna be so badass, it'll poop duke nukems. If the adventure update was ever to be implemented in our beta server however, I think wooty should press the Del button and wipe out the outlands. Though much has been built and even more has been collected, I feel like it should become a new beginning for the whole t9k beta server, with everyone restarting at the same level with resources and structures. The npc killing and griefing problem can be easily solved by zoning the areas as no building and no pvp areas, so I guess the problem won't exist.

Sounds awesome, and I agree with people above - i major overhall like that should be a fresh start but --

Instead of wiping the outlands just 'lock it down' - no more building/altering - but can still be explored (with map limits) and maybe no animals/mobs. And have gates between the old map and the new map. This would allow ppl to transfer hard earned materials to the new map but they have to build from scratch - it also allows epix structures to be presereved and viewed by newcomers to t9k in the future?

Having said all that the thought of having my stuff locked/lost is quiet worrying - I'd think I'd lose all motivation for a while!!

Sprinting is going to change the game a whole whole lot. Especially as far as pvp goes. I can see lots of bugs happening though

Especially with all the lag on this server already.. I think the server is down as we speak. Fishing poles look weird, boats are useless, and falling resources can blip into an endless buggy duloop of fallingblox. Before any new update was implemented to this server, I would hope that these simple issues would be fixed.

As far as map wiping, as much work and love as I have put into my shit, I would be greatly depressed to see it leave. At the same time, if there were to be an adventure update to the server, I would be for a total wipe. The changes in map generation alone should be enough. If Notch puts time into updating how maps are made, should we not use this new process and make a new map? Pretttttyyyyyy obvious.

Maybe there is a way to preserve specific dimensions around specific coordinates, and import those into the new map? Top 5 structures could be preserved and used in the new spawn area/NPC villages?

Until the bugs have been exterminated I will be playing classic I think.

I was all for a wipe before. And I still am up for a wipe again even though I will lose a lot. Even playing fields for a new generation of T9Kers.

Personally I think more restriction of grief is needed. Swiss cheese is only good in RL.
