Apologies for getting these to you so late.
Anyways, these are the final nominees, the last batch before we get into the real nitty-gritty of deciding just which of these battle-hardened gladiators is going to emerge victorious from the arena.
See, we're not doing the Livestream. It is simply a logistical impossibility and a hassle to boot. Sorry if I got your hopes up there but instead, we will be doing something just as cool. Or, well, nearly.
You get to decide! *confetti falls from the ceiling*
By tomorrow I'll have trimmed each list of nominees for each category down to 3 each. From whence, I will post either on the forums or in a compact post some form of poll that will allow you to exercise your inherent, human right to democratic action in deciding which one of these frivolous forms of entertainment was most worth wasting your time upon.
But for now, onto the games:
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
One of the funnest games this year. You can play it anyway you want weather its following quests or doing what ever you want like throwing dead chickens down a cliff and still have a blast. Plus it has so much content and will always keep people coming back for more. The mods will also have endless Capabilities. Skyrim has a bright future
Batman: Arkham City
Given the limited number of games I've played, my choice may be a bit skewed, but I'm giving my nod of GOTY to Batman: Arkham City. This game will undoubtedly go down as the best Batman game ever created. The characters look amazing, the story is compelling and leaves you guessing who the real villian is until the end, and the gameplay is smooth and simple. Not once in the game did I feel I was let down by the mechanics, but rather through my own mistakes. The simplicity of pressing a couple of buttons in order to send Batman into the foray and just beat the ever-living piss out of enemies is so satisfying. The voice-acting was well-done, and using the same actors from the series of my childhood just makes it that much better. The character animations are smooth and fluid. Pay close attention to the combat and it looks like every reaction is new and unique and the takedowns are GORGEOUS. Rocksteady really out-did themselves with this game and I would be very surprised to see a 3rd Batman game by them made with the same level of quality.
Portal 2
Portal 2 brought back many memories, and gave most of us nostalgia. The upbeat gameplay and cheesy tempo brings many non-gamers into play. It's a revolutionary gameplay setting that most of us will never forget, and many of us will never stop playing.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
It's release date is 20/12, but I've got to play some of the beta and It's doubtlessly the best game of the year. It's clear that this game will replace WoW as the king of all MMO's. With 8 grabbing induvidual storylines, fully voiced dialogue, aswell as iconic and new enviroments and music, It's hard to let go of it once you've started playing.
Battlefield 3
Incomparable amazing graphics, Well done storyline, Perfect Multi Player, Smooth(ish) game mechanics and overall a really well design game.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
This game is a huge game and offers immense replay value with it's dynamic quest system offering hundreds of quests. The game offers one of the best experiences that I have had in a while and, despite the launch bugs, it made it something worth loving.
Portal 2
I would have to say Portal 2. I mean, it ticked all the boxes. Fantastic gameplay, engaging and humourous storyline, next-gen graphics and rendering, immersive worlds, complex characters and playability. It managed to not repeat Portal and instead had a different, fresh-er gaming experience. The single player story was remarkable - that cannot be disputed. However, the co-op story was also great. Valve outdid themselves here - they have ultimately presented what is the equivalent of two games. And they are both landmark masterpieces.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
I am not choosing Skyrim because it is the greatest technical achievement that released in 2011 (God knows it isn't), but because it is the game that I am going to remember when I look back on this year and ask myself "What did I play in 2011? Oh, that's right - I played Skyrim." It is a big game, bursting at the seams with content. But what I am most excited about is what the game has to offer as a platform in and of its own right. In broad strokes, Skyrim is best at presenting the player with a believable, immersive fantasy. Skyrim will never be about the combat, or the AI's tactics, or its quests, or even dragons; it will be a game about being a wanderer in strange and mystical lands, one of the core themes of videogames, yet a thesis that so many other games simply cannot seem to grasp.
Battlefield 3
Battlefield 3 worked well as a game. It offered me endless hours of replayability and a large variety of gamemodes and maps. It’s audio and visual design bringing an immersion you will not find in many games. It’s graphics are splendid, although I personally didn’t get to enjoy them to their maximum potential.
