WorldHub - The Centre of Awesome
fZMpT.jpg

First things first. This is not an application thread, and any person asking to join WorldHub in this thread will be completely ignored.

This thread is merely for information. You may ask questions here - you may or may not get an answer.

What is WorldHub? A question many have asked over the last few weeks, ever since our shocking and somewhat surprisingly sudden showing on the scene took the server by storm. Legitimately purchasing over 25 town blocks in the first few hours after purchasing was opened up, we remain the largest and fastest growing area on the server with (at time of last edit) 207 plots.

However, we don't act like other towns, as many players have noted. We don't actively recruit players, we don't go out of our way to invite them either, and we turn down most requests to join our ranks; yet our numbers keep growing. We don't campaign for credits, we remain separate from the inter-town politics unless it concerns our expansion, we're relatively secretive, and we have a tendency to stick in our little Mumble channel #wh most of the time. So, we aren't a town. Well then, what are we?

In short, WorldHub is a project. Dreamed up by some of the more active and longstanding members of the community, it's evolved – and continues to evolve - into something none of us really expected. Here's a bit of history though: For those of you who remember February of 2011, you might recall the MineCart Collective – the MCC. The founding idea behind that group of players evolved and remade itself over and over again, fragmenting and reuniting in several forms until a fateful day in August, 2011. Ustulo made a thread regarding the Federation, City of Cities on that day. In this post, a mention of the WorldHub was made. Vorsprung pioneered the idea, and with much help from KurtisL, most of the entire community got very hyped over it, only to be disappointed when it didn't work out as planned. However, it didn't end there. Even though I was banned, I was still actively creeping the forums. I saw potential in the idea, and shortly after my un-banning, I began a conversation with some of the leaders of the failed project. We decided that while a great idea with solid overall planning, in practice the key reason the project didn't succeed was a lack of dedicated focus and cohesion, and a serious lack of back-up leaders in the case of unforeseeable events. A place was created to plan the design of WorldHub, and we brought more and more members into the team to help design and plan the rise of the creatively practical aspect of Team9000. Quazymoodo really came into his own in the design, showing a level of creativity nobody expected. Slowly, our project took on more aspects than the original plan of a centre for transport and commerce – we separated the two into sub-projects, added a more creative sub-project, and we're still adding more to the list of planned sub-projects. In short, we decided to become the Centre of Awesome.

But all this is just a history of how we became what we are. It doesn't say anything about what we actually are. Well, the best way to do that is to describe the phases of the project as it stands right now.

P1: Hub Market - A place for players to set up shops, unofficially, and trade with other players. This phase currently sits at approximately 99% complete.
P2: Hub Station - An underground transport hub for players to gain transportation to other towns and across the map. Towns can connect to this hub in order to provide their residents with easy access to spawn and other towns. The Station is currently being constructed and undergoing some last-minute design changes. The Sebastian line is already hooked up to it, currently there is a temporary access tunnel to get at the rails.
P3: Hub Castle - The truly epic part of our build - and is the only phase that serves no function other than eye candy. Also will contain housing for some of the founding members of WorldHub. This phase is undergoing Lot Purchasing and Final Design
P4: Hub Sky - This phase is confidential; currently in Lot Purchasing and Final Design stage.
P5: Hub Dragon - This phase is confidential; currently in Lot Purchasing stage.
P6: Hub Arena - On the same scale as the Coliseum of Eagle Pass, but with a more balanced design and probably without the lava pit; this arena will serve as a place for players to get that PvP itch out of their system, with plans for weekly tournaments in the works as well as full-scale battles just for the hell of it. This phase is currently in Preliminary Design stage.
P7: Hub Library – A truly massive library to rival anything seen before on the server, copies of several different books will be stored here. This phase is in Preliminary Design
P8: Hub Maze - This phase is confidential; currently in Preliminary Design.
P9: Hub Rails - The part of the project set aside for the rail system. This phase is Ongoing.
P10: Hub Housing - The part of the project set aside for Member housing. This phase is Ongoing, and individual-driven.

This post may be edited in the future with more details.

Phases go through several stages before completion.

1. Planning - brainstorming for the phase, what it is, what it should look like.
2. Preliminary Design - a "first draft" design, this is essentially an outline of what we want to see. Layouts are deliberated, major changes are made and finalized.
3. Design - everything is built up from the layout. Walls, hallways, chandeliers, dragons, etc.
4. Final Design - intricate details are added, last chance for changes.
5. Lot Purchasing - purchasing the area necessary to build.
6. Material Gathering - usually happens at the same time as Lot Purchasing. Gathering materials for the construction.
7. Construction - building the damned thing. The largest phases will have stages 5, 6, and 7 occur simultaneously.
8. Completion.

I thought this was Vorsprung's idea.
I'm sorry, you really need to get clued in to things in general. Ideas from the MCC sparked the first wave of motion, then I began the second with the Federation, in which cities were connected to a central Hub. Vorsprung coined the term WorldHub. The third, and final motion began with TheGurw giving rebirth to the WorldHub.

I need more credit than that.

Trawl back through the 80 odd pages of the Federation thread and look at my contribution there.

This. Vorsprung and Kurtis were essentially the founders of WorldHub, driving the initial form under the name.

lolk, I was only mentioning the earliest stages of development for each stage; notice how I didn't make any note of the accomplishments of MCC, or of the 80 pages of the Federation, or any of the work done by the current WorldHub team.

I've been around and with world hub for awhile, more than most I think. It's just I do nothing but masturbate in the corner and watch as people do super awesome stuff.

Being the military leader for the now dead Federation, I always supported this idea.

This is looking up to be the icon of this world (similar to how Eagle Pass was the icon of the 1.6.6 world, BioDome and Sanctum were the icons of the 1.7 world, and Haven was the icon of the previous world).

I do have a suggestion though, what about a WorldHub Casino and Hotel?

I know what you're thinking: "Raptor, a casino is impossible". Well, it almost is. I'm sure with the redstone scientists involved in WorldHub, a few makeshift casino machines could be made, which gamblers would pay to use by diamonds.

Much less complicated would be a hotel, which could function as a place for leaders of WorldHub affiliated towns to stay in temporarily. Kurtis made a damn fine looking hotel in Haven, so I imagine making a good looking hotel in WorldHub would not be difficult.

Hm... I remember when this was a budding idea, back before the last map. <3 If I recall, I requested that I be allowed to open a shop somewhere within the WorldHub. A Miscellaneous shop, mind you. Mob drops, weapons, tools, maybe a few rarer items. I know I haven't been keeping up to date with things, I was wondering if it would be possible for this to turn into a reality now. :) Of course, I'd donate half of what I earn to the WorldHub. <3 Need some form of profit, yeah?

That's the entire premise of the Hub Market. Vendors come to sell items, consumers come to buy items.

I like the Hotel, even if practically it serves little to no purpose. But on the other hand, I don't see a Casino working at all without a plugin.
