Try and infect Madagascar in that game. I dare you.
I did it. You need to get it before the flights and harbors shut down, and VERY early in the game. Madagascar is awfully touchy in that game, and locks down first of all the regions 98% of the time.

Alright. So, the public become aware of the pandemic. At this point I can assume one of two things.
1. I, being the somewhat paranoid person I am, have already assumed the worst and jumped immediately to Phase 3; taking anyone in my family and close friends that I can convince with me to my bunker in the Rocky Mountains. If this is the case, all that remains is for us to wait it out and search out other surviving groups in order to better repopulate the earth.

2. I, being the cautiously calm person I am, was aware of the possibility of the worst, and taken steps to ensure that Phase 1 goes smoothly; without going into panic-mode and over-preparing. If this is the case, Phase 1 begins now.

Phase 1: Assuming that the spread is rapid and not manageable by normal procedures or has already spread quietly to the point of pandemic-level infection, now is when I gather my close friends and relatives. I will encourage careful hiding near the western edge of the city/just outside of the city and acquisition of long-distance motorcycles (touring bikes are ideal), preferably 2-3 seaters but one per person; and a range of high-powered blunt damage weapons (grenades, flamethrowers, shotguns (especially slug ammunition), high-caliber rifles, etc).

Phase 2: Once initial panic of the non-infected population settles down after 2-3 days, we will make our way out of the city en masse using the maneuverability of the motorcycles to get through spots other vehicles wouldn't be able to. We will attempt to befriend any survivors we can along the way, which is where the multiple-seats per bike will come into play. Once we reach a safe distance outside of the city, we will begin searching for useful goods such as non-perishable foodstuffs and off-road vehicles (for fuel-hauling, mainly; but later for raid-transport). Note that this is all done while maintaining a general movement westward. Phase 3 begins when we get close to the Rocky Mountains.

Phase 3: Assuming we make it this far, we will move into my (unfortunately still under construction, but liveable) bunker that is high up in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. With enough food to last 20 people two years, and difficult enough for a fully mobile person to reach (let alone a zombie); we should be safe, if bored, for a few years provided we continue to raid every so often and the natural spring and meltwater from the glacier nearby hold up. The nearby glacier is conducive to refrigerating perishable foodstuffs brought back from raids. Solar panels and wind turbines provide enough power to light and heat the whole complex, and send out radio broadcasts to encourage other survivors to join us. Of course, the amount of amassed weaponry we would have on hand would be enough to take out a small army should other survivors prove hostile.
