I've run Java7 since it was launched and have never had any issues running Classic - but then again, I connect via a direct link versus choosing from the server list. Seemed like a cop-out to me that WoM suggested folks revert to 6 as a work-around.
Java 6 is not "required" for classic to "work," but Java 7 WILL throw an array error and crash your game periodically. Java 6 doesn't check this specific array parameter, so it doesn't crash on this event.
