Nvidia's latest project attempts to make PC gaming more portable.
The tech company announced Project Shield, a device featuring a small, touchscreen paired with a traditional video game controller. The device allows users to play either PC titles or Android games found on the Google Play app store.
Project Shield supports PCs running Nvidia's GeForce GTX, and allow players to access games downloaded from Valve online service Steam through a Wi-Fi connection.
The controller is reminiscent of the original Microsoft Xbox, featuring the standard four face buttons, shoulder buttons along the top, two thumbsticks and a directional pad. On top of the controller is a 5-inch, multi-touch retinal display with a 720p HD resolution. However, players can still use the controller without the smaller screen if they choose.
"We imagined a device that would do for games what the iPod and Kindle have done for music and books, letting us play in a cool new way," says Nvidia CEO and co-founder Jen-Hsun Huang in a statement.
Players will also have the option to download Android games through Nvidia's TegraZone game studio, with titles optimized for the device's Tegra 4 processor.
