A template feature could be implemented with certain default or custom presets used to give someone a starting point on a thread they can't exactly figure out to start, or custom templates could be used to save someone's progress on a post if they don't have the time to finish it.

Obviously these are terrible reasons on my behalf but surely others could think of more sophisticated reasoning for this change to be implemented?

You mean something like a save feature for creating threads, or just posts in general? I could see where saving threads/blogs would be helpful for those who may make rather wordy posts. An alternative would be to just type your response in a word document or something like that and just copy/paste when you're finished.
