So I started my first world in 1.9 (Btw, I am sooo confused about how everything works now). This is my spawning area:

A mushroom island...that is not an island (walked around to make sure; It is beachside, but not an island)

Normally they're in island form.

They could be near a land before 1.9 too, but they are very rare so you were just lucky
