Besides the crash exploit introduced in 1.8.3, there's another reason not to give newbs books. Apparently they can be used to get OP status if the link/text with command is clicked on by an Admin/Op.
Craft a writable book.
Type some text into it. Preferably a URL so that people will click on it.
Click Sign and give it a title.
Click Command Link and type in the command ".cbook /op <IGN>"
Click Done.
Give it to an admin/OP.
Granted this is based on the assumption that OPs have the ability to run /op and it isn't restricted to console only
