I think I heard that same idea from a Desmond Morris show on TLC/Discovery. Pretty much any fleshy cleft is designed as a throwback to when the female genitals were exposed and swollen when she was ready to mate. Once we walked upright and no longer had a distinct estrus, you couldn't notice it anymore, but being dumb males, we still needed a sign that women wanted sex.

Hence, buttcheeks.
