minecraft memory hog

ok, seriously ... what's up with that? why is minecraft (i guess java, really) taking up twice as much RAM as even the currently memory-hogging firefox? any1 got a suggestion to throttle this back some?

Make it not be in java, then it might be less of a memory hog. Java sucks.

Not only does alpha have terrible memory leaks, it's also written in java. Not much you can do.

You could eliminate the issue of the memory hog of firefox and just use a local client...

The downloadable client typically takes 3-4x the memory I'm currently using in firefox.
