T9K reunion server

I appologize for posting so rapidly in succession, but something just occurred to me. Does anyone remember those large structures near the Outlands spawn? They were quite large, made of wool, and never seemed to be griefed. The best I can do to describe them is that they were often cylindrical and had numbers on them. One even came out of the water, while the rest made the areas under them dangerous because of the low light levels.

Does anyone know what they were? Who built them, why did the said person or group of people build them, and why were they never griefed much?

Vague post is vague.

I don't recall what you're referring to.

While I wasn't around for the 1.8 server, and I don't know how that set up worked, it seems like the towns would split people up. That seems counterproductive to what is trying to be done. Why not have a simpler set-up with a single map world. A sphere of 'grey' area where people congregate to build/farm/set up settlements, and an outer sphere of 'anarchy' where anything goes. You go there to your own peril. A literal Outland. Which kind-of makes sense, as the farther one gets from civilization, as meager as it is, the worse one's mindset gets. (I seem to forget about enderchests. However, I don't know how stable the nether is in multiplayer, as the server had problems with it.)

There were no towns in 1.8, it was more a 'band of brothers' thing, you respected each other items and kept hidden chests. While we moved freely back and forth at will, you had to be 'known' ok before someone would tell you where they were at.

We started at Spawn and got greifed to hell, move a little further out to Melonville, got greifed to hell, Create an underground city Petra further out (that got griefed to hell), then Bulls Head (which was also further out and greifed to hell repeatedly and rebuilt several times by Thee_Pro). So then we made a hidden town at about 20K out that was connected via hidden rails call Mooville (and it's sister town Teraville) that was also griefed to hell by vvhite buffalo. Then we found a mushroom biome at 30k out, I also remember BaconJim digging a nether tunnel out to 100K from spawn.. Then being very Sneaky we built Vault 69 at about 1200 from spawn which was the final town of that world.

While you may say what fun is it to be griefed to hell? IT was fun to build new cities every two weeks, to hide, and work as collective group watching out for each other. If you love pure 'survival' minecraft and don't get overly attached to any one thing...That was an awesome world...

Side Note: Beds were broken in 1.8...every time we died we had to walk all the way back.... No Risk, No Reward!

There were a bunch of buildings that Dutch Cheese made but I don't remember them being made of wool.

I'm not crying... It's.. Liquid Pride.

And amazingly, every single time Bull's Head got griefed to shit, my house was always the only one untouched (probably because it was mostly fenceposts and wooden slabs, which at the time were fireproof). Until the final time, which was when I decided to call it a day and move to the Vault.

The bonds it created between the members of that world still lives on to this day and we'd do anything to help each other out.

I'm more interested in creating one massive metropolis where the entire community works/builds.

Any inevitable drama is carried out by a court or something.

Maybe we could even implement jobs or something to everyone, and have a socialist sort of economy.
Or we could go capitalist and just have everyone work and play together.

However it goes, I think, especially with the shrinking size of everything, I think everyone should be in one large city, with a downtown so to speak and residential outskirts.

This would be absolutely amazing.

Ahh, 1.8 beta, where you had to rely on reed length to track people and could build nether portal lava traps (killed the player and unlit the portal) to steal from unsuspecting players. Good times.

I've never done well in large towns, just small ones. Large ones end up causing too much lag.

If all goes well, I suggest we have periodic PVP events. (e.g. GUHC, StTheo's Sort-Of-Ultra-Hardcore Tournament)
Of course, those things require a lot of preparation and management, so it is merely an idea.

How about this: a person constructs a colosseum. Or a building of any kind. Issues a command, maybe "/arena [name]". Announcement is made, people remove all items, join with "/join [name]", and get teleported to first player. First player types "/begin [name]". Countdown is broadcast, then people kill each other with weapons auto-generated for them. Dying teleports you to where you were when you joined. Winning, no clue how to handle that.

I kind of like that idea, but my initial thought was of a longer, survival-style setup. The problem is that would require a seperate map. This may very well be the best compromise, or perhaps this could be implemented on a more regular basis with ultra-hardcore tournaments every few months.

Concerning another topic, I have been considering the issue of towns. We don't want too many official towns, but too few may not be the best option either. There should certainly exist a place like Minetopia, but as to how many greylisted towns there should be, I have no idea. A variety of building styles should be covered, but there is also the issue of administration; players may refrain from joining a town simply because of its leadership. This will prove to be a delicate balance between new towns and simply letting players settle in the Outlands.

Concerning yet another topic, have we reached a conclusion as to who is hosting this server? Are there any estimates as to a date for its initial launch?

We're just throwing around ideas, we aren't even to the planning stage yet.

I agree about the number of towns. I vote we go with the style set up by the Outlands server: make a new official town when we feel it's needed (which generally works out to about a month after the general population ask for it).

I just don't think we'll have the player base to support multiple towns...

I still hold that one massive town would be epic.

Most likely, we're not going to have anything like towny or such. Or at least, that's what I'm assuming, and am agreeing with.

Thus it wouldn't exactly matter. There could be a "main town" but people could do other things if they want. That's what I did.

I see one of two scenarios.

The solo players go off and do their things, causing the people who like to work with others to be few and spread out between towns, creating many different tent villages, and one city (Haven) that looks somewhat decent.

Or we try to have a moderate level or organization, and have a giant mass of tents and mansions together in one (preferably organized) bundle.

I personally prefer the second one, but it seems like 90% of T9k hates organization with a burning passion.
