Texas to secede from the US? More to follow? Wait... What?

Today in my 2nd period class, one of my friends brought up the topic that there were a bunch of states putting forth a petition to secede from the union. Louisiana was the first to petition. Texas soon followed.
Whitehouse.gov said:
Peacefully grant the State of Texas to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.

The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government's neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it's citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.
This is actually kind of scary to me. https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitions Here is a list of all open petitions to the Obama administration. Last time I counted, 27 states had put in petitions. Most of them were southern states, but New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Oregon, and Pennsylvania have also started petitions, among a few others. The deal with these petitions is that they need 25,000 signatures in a month to be considered by the White House staff. While I don't think there will be a Republic of Texas anytime soon, it still is startling. The petition for Texas to secede was started on Friday, and it already has 40K+ signatures. Just to put into perspective, the state of Tennessee had about 3,000 signatures earlier this morning. About 12 hours later, it has almost 12,000. I want to know what you guys think about this. Do you think all these states actually could secede and create their own countries?

we petition the obama administration to:
remove all foreign aid to Uganda and impose sanctions if the "Kill the Gays" bill is passed by the legislature.

The Ugandan government is poised to pass the Anti-Homosexuality bill in their parliament which has an unprecedented scope and scale, including the death penalty for certain homosexual acts. Details are available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uganda_Anti-Homosexuality_Bill.

The signors of this petition request that the Obama administration not only state their displeasure at this bill as they have already done, but to also attach real consequences to the passing of this bill in the form of loss of trade status and foreign aid. We would also request that the Obama administration petition the UN to have the security council vote on international sanctions. We feel that this gross human rights violation requires no less of a response.

And you aren't worried about this?

I am not saying it is a good idea. I am just saying it would be an amazing thing. And i think they could do it

This is a recording of some of the anti-gay Ugandans.

I never said I wasn't worried about this. I was making this thread about many people in many different states petitioning to secede, not about that. While I do agree something does need to be done about that, this was created with the intent of discussing the people petitioning to secede. Making a thread about something does not mean I am not worried about this other thing from the same website.

Those petitions are not submitted by states. They are submitted by individuals. Anyone can create a petition on that site saying anything they want.

So this is what they mean by "the South shall rise again".

All in all, look at the number of signatures. With signatory numbers in the low thousands, it's not going to happen.

Just pointing this out, all of these were started mere days ago. They have 1 month to reach 25,000 signatures and be considered. Look at Texas for example. In a few days they have gotten well over 40,000 signatures. Like I said earlier, it's really kind of scary when you think about what could happen.

You seem to be unaware of the history of the site. Even petitions which reach the signature threshold are simply "responded to." Don't quote me on this, but I don't believe a single petition has actually resulted in action.

Bro don't be scared of anything. These extremists cant rise against half of the country. And i m pretty sure there is more people in these states that rather be part of the U.S. then be against it.

So long as the new country does not attack any U.S. own territories then you will forever be in the right (don't do what those last guys did). So long as you don't attack the Union (unless they attack you) I will defend you and your legal right to rebel.
However, I probably won't look at any views that counter my own views at all!

"regulate porn"

I guess they never learn America does NOT own the Internet.

Will they develop their own currency? Oh well, these matters stem from dissatisfaction of current ruling members of the white house.

I don't know if anyone else is Canadian but:

Quebec (one of the larger/more populated provinces) nearly seceded from Canada in 1995. There was a provincial referendum and it was really close.

Separate: 49.42%
Don't Separate: 50.58%

I don't remember all the details from my history classes but basically they would have their own government and have more control over their funding and laws but would share Canadas currency and share military. You can read more about it here.

I strongly doubt Texas would ever get the support to try something like this. But then again, most of us didn't think Quebecs separation talk would lead to a referendum.
