General Anime Discussion Thread

So again I started watching Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso and right of the bat i get the feeling it can only end in 3 ways (which i won't say since that could be considered as spoilers if its true) so i think thats a no.

And now i've tried Grisaia No Kajitsu And i get the feeling of another anime maybe not the same but with the whole "class murderers/theifs/bandits/assassins kind of thing".

Like Akuma No Riddle I can expect alot of backstory and character story why they are there and i can see a colour while doing so.

And that colours name is (I think you can guess it.)
Blood Red.

EDIT: Also for those who read the 5 manga chapters of this one should know that in the anime it feels like a lot more bloody then in the manga. (Hint: Its more of a eroge in the manga, 5 chapters, 2 sex scenes.)
Absolutely going to watch the anime and hope for blood, rather then reading about all .. y'know.

4 Episodes into Hellsing Ultimate.

This is most metal anime I've seen in my life. And that's a VERY GOOD thing.
(Already like it better than the original, and I honestly liked the original)

I can't even handle the awesomeness of log horizon. It's like, all the awesome stuff that could and should happen in an mmo, without having to play the mmo. Literally the best thing ever.

As far as Fate/Stay night goes, action and animation is still absolutely first class. I wouldn't be so concerned about Shirou if there were some guarantee that he will at least change and develop a little bit, but from what I heard of Stay/Night, that just, never happens. Copy pasted oblivious MC good guy help everyone protagonist originally from a visual novel doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me. But I'm more than willing to be surprised.

As I said like 1 or 2 pages ago, Shirou's a pretty decent character (in the visual novel at least). Hopefully Ufotable don't butcher his character like Deen did, especially since UBW has the most interesting character development/moments for Shirou in my opinion.

Digibro just finished an 8 nights of Kara no Kyoukai presentation and if you have seen the movies I would highly suggest them. He says outright that they are mostly his personal feelings towards the show, but it's certainly fun to look back on them and see different ideas and perspectives on the show. If you HAVEN'T seen Kara no Kyoukai, all of these videos are spoilers, and I'd suggest experiencing it yourself as it really is an amazing series.

The first video can be found here.

Thinking back on it, Enjou Tomoe from movie 5 reminds me bit of Shirou from Fate/Stay Night, what little of him I've seen and heard of that is, (they also look exactly alike). I really enjoyed Tomoe's character, so if Shirou could capture that just a little, with a more good guy approach that would also be cool. Enjou almost seems like a failed version of Shirou, which is perhaps why I find him interesting, as I'm kinda backwards and morbid in that way :).

So Volume 5 of Edge of Spider-Verse featured a few anime characters in the background. And I for one think that's pretty freakin cool.

Why are Shinji and Rei's seats reversed? What is Kaworu doing in the school when he was never in it in Evangelion? How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Same reason why Simon is in their class: We're all idiots.

Continuation of Brennan's ongoing relationship with Gurren Lagann:

Now you all said Episode 7 (Entitled You're Gonna Do It!!) was gonna be the big episode that will change everything, I think you all meant to say Episode 8 (Entitled
Later, Buddy
) was the big episode. And to think I was about to give up entirely on this series, guess I'm back in the saddle.

Unrelated note (since I've been watching Attack on Titan via Toonami):

The reveal of the Female Titan's true identity was literally one of the dumbest things I've seen in my life and the moment Jean Kirstein dies (whether that ACTUALLY happens or not) I will officially stop watching that show because he is LITERALLY the only character I give two shits about AND the only character on the show who has undergone character development. Eren is so fucking bland as an anime hero and hasn't changed a bit despite all that's happened and Mikasa is such a Mary Sue that I want to drive nails into my head whenever she appears on screen being the supreme badass/boring character she is.

(Small rant over)

Whoops. Looks like I forgot exactly what episode it was. I was one off. ;(

I feel like I'm going to get shitted on for asking this, but...

Why do people hate SAO (SAO/ALO arc) anyway? I found it rather enjoyable, with the exception of Sugou just being...icky.

Well I can tell you my personal experience with it, if that helps.

First arc (14 episodes) were kinda entertaining. Nothing exceptional (imo) but was at least a little fun, reminded me of Summer War even. The main character (I don't remember his name) felt generic and the fanservice was annoying (as it always is in my books), but the setting seemed like it was gonna be a lot of fun so I kept going. Off topic: That scene where the main character revealed he was a beta tester was one of the dumbest things I've seen in anime, due to how OOC it was, how out of fucking nowhere it was and how poorly executed it was in general. When the main antagonist gave his big "Seeing the castle in his dreams and not remembering why he set it up for the players to die" speech, I thought that was one of the greatest speeches in an anime (it's still up there with The Major's speech in Hellsing: Ultimate)...then the series continued for no good reason.

Basically the second arc bugged the shit out of me because the main character became OP as shit, thus removing the tension that he could possibly die, had a weird incest vibe relationship between the main character and his sister, that weird guy (who looked like he was 30) talking about how much he wants to marry a 14 year old and had the thought of how pointless this whole arc was in the front of my mind (plus the fact that it could've had a REALLY GOOD ending if it wanted to). Oh yea then that whole German Dungeon Porn scene at the end, seriously WTF was that (I've watched Evangelion, Akira, Hellsing and Angel's Egg and that German Dungeon Porn shit was creepier than all of that put together and two of those listed gave me strange dreams and nightmares).

I didn't bother watching SAO2, I was so bored and annoyed with the first series that I just said "I'm done with this series." From what my brother told me, who watched he first few episodes, it was meh (5/10 rating). He said the best thing was the Laughing Coffins were back (which we both agreed was the best thing in the series).

TL;DR
I thought the series was littered with basic anime tropes, a bland main character, thought the ending to season 1 made up for all of its low points, pissed that season 2 was a thing, season 2 was boring and WTF was with that German Dungeon Porn at the end!? Didn't watch SOA2

Hope that answers your question, because I honestly don't think I answered it...

The last arc is where my money's at. If you read the light novels, the final arc has Kirito (the OP main char) stuck in a coma after several events that led up from where the 3rd/4th arc ends. The "game" in that arc has almost no relation whatsoever to any of the previous arcs. Its still on-going so i don't know how it ends, but it's really good.

Honestly speaking, I'd agree with you if I had never read the novels. Watching the anime for me now is just a visualization of whatever happened in the novel. True, there are lots of cliche and overused shit going on here (read as "main char always OP, main char always wins"), but I do disagree on the fanservice being annoying as its actually very minimal here. Or maybe my mind is animed to death and I couldn't give less shit about it anymore. Meh.

In the end, for me, I watch anime for 3 things:
1) Enjoying the story
2) Enjoying the animation
3) Enjoying that I'm enjoying 1) and 2)

As long as 1 of the 3 are met, the simple guy that I am will be satisfied.

On a somewhat related/unrelated/idkitsanimesoitsrelated note, I just watched the latest UBW episode and hooooly shieeet. That fight scene was orgasmic. I loved it. Really a massive leap, bound, orbital launch, interstellar warp from the original Fate Stay Night battle. Saw everything I was expecting to see and more. I only find it a pity that
Berserker
is not going to get another proper fight scene.

That show had German Dungeon Porn?! Maybe I have misjudged it based on the episodes I watched when it was on Toonami :sneaky: ...

In all seriousness I think the series is alright for a concept and it started off ok. Key word is "ok". When I see people running around stating that Sword Art Online should be viewed up there with the greats of the anime medium it kinda annoys me. I feel similarly about Hentalia or Kill La Kill; the concepts are nice and the execution is ok but nothing stands out. Also Im pretty sure the series turned my friend into a siscon so that doesn't help my relationship with it much.

That too.

Attack on Titan is even worse about this.

Attack on Titan is a decent concept, (read: not very good), with no likeable characters (read: No characters, just zombies riding horses), brought to it's fame by good animation, and decent fights.

Manga is even worse because there is no good animation to bring it up, it's just watching the lifeless entities interact with bigger lifeless entities.

Heck, the titans had more personality than all of the main characters combined... The way they ran was so expressive...
